About the Conservation Buyer Program
Occasionally the Land Bank acquires a special property that may not be appropriate for long-term public ownership.  When the land’s conservation values can be protected without full public ownership, the Land Bank Commission may recommend a sale.

For example, if the goal for the property is to preserve a scenic viewshed or agricultural field, the Land Bank might configure a sale to protect these primary features, include the property in the Conservation Buyer program and sell it to a private owner.

The conservation buyer becomes a partner with the Land Bank in maintaining and preserving some of San Juan County’s most valuable and beautiful landscapes and may be eligible for tax savings.  The sale returns the property to the tax rolls and generates funds that are reinvested in other land conservation projects.
